What we actually do
- Term and whole life — the straightforward answer when all you need is coverage.
- Indexed universal life (IUL) — life insurance first, with an account inside the policy credited on how a market index performs.
- Living benefit riders — optional riders that can pay a portion of the benefit while you are alive after a qualifying illness.
- Final expense — smaller, simpler policies aimed at covering what a funeral actually costs.
The part most people skip. An indexed policy has a cap, so a big index year does not all reach you, and usually a floor, so an index drop does not reduce your account value. You give up the top to protect the bottom. Charges also come out every year and the cost of insurance rises with age — fund it poorly and those charges eat it. How it is built matters more than what it is called, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.
